The most popular break for road and mountain bikes is the caliper rim brake. The mechanism is like this, it pulls a lever so as to a cable. Then it is forcing the brake pads/shoes to press against the inner rim of the front/rear wheel to stop the bike at once.

Although the caliper brakes are light and relatively inexpensive than other break system, it works efficiently in rainy season. When earth gets wet it creates double force at-a-time to stop the bicycle. This helps water to reduce the friction between the brakes and the wheel. With a very gentle pressure by cyclist, the caliper breaks works at his best.

The important thing is that you have to balance the braking between front and rear brakes same time when you riding. Due to momentum of body inertia rider can hardly make balance as he often braked hard for front wheel to stop the bicycle.
