Some times it is too difficult to break down the bicycle at the some inconvenient places only because nasty habit of the chain. If the chain maintenance is proper, somehow problems like jumpy or jerky can be evaded. It will good for you to check twice a month or after 10 hours of your continuous riding to your bicycle chain. Don’t avoid checking the chain in the rainy season or bad weather.

If your chain gets worn out, tight, rusted or has run more than 1000 miles then you should be replaced the chain of your bicycle. Generally the length of a new chain with 24 links is 12 inches. Make sure that if the length exceeds by 1/16 of an inch, the chain should be replaced other wise it will damage to your sprocket and chain ring. Even if, you should replace the chain when you are replacing the sprocket and chain rings simultaneously.

Actually the chain gets longer due to wear and tear of pins and sleeves where the metal parts have not any problem. Lubrication to your chain is necessary, which is the best way to extend the life of the chain as well as to the other parts. So a drop of lubricant should be put into each and every pin in the chain for its better performances. You will also able to avoid attracting dirties from earth if you wiped with a clean rag to soaked the chain for 15-20 minutes.

You can remove grease, grime and lubricant with dish soap or a de-greaser. Don’t forget to lubricate the chain after cleaning the grease or lubricant again. In fact the cleanser should be placed in the center of a sponge or rag for cleaning the chain. Then do the backpedaled to place the chain around. This procedure should be in continual until the chain is free of dirt with rinsing the rag every time.

Try to prevent the chain from getting weakened. You should also inspect for any tight links by backpedaling while cleaning the chain. A tight chain can jump the teeth and may have jerky movement. So chain should be loosened by flexing between two points and five links away on either side of the tight link, if the tight link is identified. Another thing to remember that chain needs replaced when the chain is noisy on a ride, that means cleaning is not sufficient for this chain any more. Even when the pedaling becomes rough and sprocket teeth are not fitting properly to the chain, it is time to change the chain.
